we’ve learned the reason the show was cancelled. @puckdotnews Matthew Belloni claims to be somewhat responsible for the choice and claims to know why. Chris had been collaborating with the award show’s producers on the tribute for several weeks.
Chris felt he had been “shadow-banned” from Hollywood since the #MeToo movement, so the producers wanted to give him a chance to show off his talents. The producers wanted him to perform at the awards ceremony.
Belloni asserts that as soon as he learned of Chris Brown’s performance, he immediately got in touch with Disney and ABC’s top brass to discuss the “optics” of the show. It wasn’t the best Idea, he claims, to have “a c’onvicted do’mestic a’buser feting an alleged child m’olester” on a Disney network.
Before Belloni contacted and informed them, the higher-ups were even unaware of Chris’ performance. The producers were promptly instructed by the executives to cut the tribute in its entirety after they learned about the performance. Chris could still perform,
but he couldn’t do the tribute because it would be too “radioactive,” according to the producers, who were reportedly incensed at the decision to cancel the performance because they were aware of the b’acklash they would face.
However, after speaking with several company executives, they came to this decision. Chris refused to consider a different course of action, insisting that it was either the performance he had planned to give or nothing at all. He therefore skipped the performance and uploaded the rehearsal video to Instagram.
